17, The Boltons, Christopher's office location
I offer an initial interview so that you – with or without your partner – may gather the information you need to make a careful choice of counsellor.
I provide this at no charge.
This makes it easier for you to ask questions without feeling you are wasting money that should be going on counselling.
It also makes it easier for me to respond without feeling I should really be concentrating on counselling rather than informing.
In this way, the most you have to lose is the time and thought you put into the interview.
At the end of our talk you should be armed with facts and an experience base that you can use as you continue in your selection process.
The challenge of selecting for subjective measures
I know it’s very common to take the first counsellor that comes your way so you may think I’m making more of a fuss about this than need be.

Counsellors' labels may be similar but their effect depends on client taste.
However, I’m very conscious that it is impossible to pick the best counsellor for yourself without meeting them first.
There is no other way to create a point of comparison for such essential factors as:
- personality,
- intuition,
- rapport,
- emotional intelligence,
- creativity and
- counselling style.
It is these factors that determine the success or otherwise of your counselling engagement.
The challenge of selecting for quality
Many clients have found that their working relationships with counsellors were less rewarding than their investment in time and money deserved.
Here’s why:
- There is a tremendous array of qualifications to sift through and a wide range of prices.
- There is a substantial variation in quality and effectiveness between practitioners.
- There is no consumer guide to tell you which counsellor is the ‘best buy’.
- Recommendations often fall flat because the work is so personal that one person’s admired counsellor might well be the worst possible choice for another.
For all those reasons it is essential to accept that there is no external way to assess the quality of potential practitioners.
To take your commitment seriously, you have to meet them in person.
Evaluation interview at no charge
For all the above reasons I provide prospective relationship counselling clients with a free 50-minute evaluation interview. Just call or email me and we’ll set up the appointment.
I do this because I believe it to be best practice.
However, I do ask you to remember that this meeting is not for counselling, even though it will be necessary to discuss the situation that brings you to the interview.
The real purpose and source of value for you is for you to question me about my counselling approach. Also, it gives you the chance to satisfy yourself that you have fully explored my beliefs about relationships and human nature.
After the interview
For those who eventually decide to work with me, the interview has the benefit of accelerating the start of our relationship counselling. This helps to ensure a rapid return on your investment in the work.
To set up an appointment, please call me on 0800-949-6030 or email me using the contact page.
I look forward to meeting with you.
